Hotel Sylvia Newport Oregon Review: A Literary Hotel by the Sea

I have a penchant for colorful hotels and art hotels, so Hotel Sylvia in Newport, Oregon, isn’t an obvious Kate hotel. There isn’t maximalist decor or a riot of color waiting around every corner. Instead, there are books, quiet reading nooks, author themed rooms, and the Pacific Ocean right outside the door.

And after multiple days spent hiking in Redwood National & State Park, that’s a pretty compelling combination.

Hotel Sylvia is a 22-room boutique hotel with a literary theme, ocean views, and a cozy atmosphere that makes it very easy to settle in and do absolutely nothing for a while. Which, after hiking the Saint Perpetua Trail, was exactly what we needed.

Walking into Hotel Sylvia, shelves filled with books, puzzles, and literary-themed gifts sit opposite the check-in desk. A fridge and freezer sit underneath, where guests can grab bags of ice or sweet treats for a small fee. It’s an unusual spot for the ice, but I suppose it saves the hotel from needing an ice machine on every floor.

Ocean Breeze, Books, and Good Sleep

While I pre-checked in and noted an expected arrival around check-in time, our epic hike up the Saint Perpetua Trail made us later than planned.

Why mention that? The front desk person texted us when we were late to check on us. I thought that was delightful! Due to cell connectivity, I didn’t see the text til I arrived, but it’s the thought that counts.

We were in desperate need of a shower after our adventures of the day, and the fantastic water pressure and amazing toiletries were heaven on earth. My ankles were absolutely disgusting after hiking a really mucky trail, and that shower did a great job of getting all the sweat and muck off me.

The epic hike also left us tired, and Hotel Sylvia had the atmosphere for a near-perfect night’s sleep. The room was cool, the bedding was comfortable, and the sound of waves crashing against the shore… apps could never match that ambiance.

Having the door cracked open with the sound of the ocean all night? Heavenly. I was only moderately worried about a bird coming in because my bestie said that could happen. A scenario I had spent zero time considering, but proceeded to dwell on until sleep took over.

Thankfully, no birds disturbed us, and sleep came fast. Was it the exhaustion from the day’s hike? Or was it the very comfortable mattress, nice linens, and the abundant pillows? We may never know, but we slept soundly.

A Quiet Morning at Hotel Sylvia

Hotel Sylvia has a leave-a-book, take-a-book exchange program, and it felt appropriate to leave behind a book about a beach. I started Fever Beach by Carl Hiaasen and was itching to finish it so I could participate. Alas, I was so tired by the end of most days that I just didn’t finish it.

The next morning, my bestie and I enjoyed a very leisurely walk along Nye Beach. Unfortunately, that meant we ran out of time for a sit-down breakfast. Breakfast wasn’t included in our rate, but the hotel does have an on-site restaurant called Café Sylvia. It’s open to everyone, not just hotel guests. The menu looked delicious, so if you have the time, I’d check it out.

A major bummer was the broken espresso machine during our stay. Caffeine is always required before a long drive. Thankfully, Coasties Roasties was close by and in the right direction. Supporting a Newport small business felt like the right way to start the drive.

On Sinks and Broken Espresso Machines

The iced latte gods laughed in my desperation.

While the broken espresso machine was likely a one-off problem, it was still a bummer. We needed caffeine to power our drive back to Portland, and it would’ve been great to grab an iced latte at the hotel before leaving.

Thankfully, Coasties Roasties was close by and in the right direction. Supporting a Newport small business felt like the right way to start the drive.

With an excellent shower, delightful toiletries that made us presentable, and a bed so comfortable, you might wonder if I loved everything about the room.

Not everything.

I booked the room knowing full well that the sink was in the bedroom rather than in the enclosed bathroom with the shower and toilet. The hotel was renovated in 2025, so I’m sure the decision was made for very specific reasons. Still, it was a little weird.

And the sink was tiny. The two of us had to use the bookshelf and nightstands to store our extra toiletries because there wasn’t enough room for much more than our toothbrushes and toothpaste.

For a one-night stay, it wasn’t a dealbreaker. But if you’re traveling with someone and travel with your multi-step skincare routine, consider yourself warned.

Would I Return to Hotel Sylvia?

Maybe. We had a really enjoyable one-night stay, and I’d absolutely recommend Hotel Sylvia if you’re looking for a quiet, bookish hotel with ocean views in Newport.

But there’s another Newport hotel I’ve had my eye on: the Louie Boutique Motel. Since I’m incapable of visiting a destination without wanting to investigate approximately every interesting hotel within a 10-mile radius, I need to stay there before deciding where Hotel Sylvia ultimately lands on my Newport list.

And remember that book I planned to leave at Hotel Sylvia? I finally finished Fever Beach on the long flight home and put it in a Little Free Library when I got back to DC. Not quite the book exchange I had planned, but I think it still counts.
